BIRD WATCHING

A pair of binoculars,
your field guide, and a step out on to your balcony here at the
Soundings will give you a good start on your "life list" of sea
birds. There are also many special areas on the Cape where you'll
enjoy "birding" at its' best. And because Cape Cod is part of the
Great Eastern Flyway migratory route, Spring and Fall provide extra
opportunities to see species outside of their home range.
Please check The
Audubon Society, Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary
for some of the best bird watching in the country.
Two of my favorite areas, both near the Soundings, can get you close
to the "action" , fast;
Bell's Neck Road Conservation Area - NO WALKING AT ALL; just
pull your vehicle over almost anywhere on Bell's Neck Road and wait
for the birds to come to you. (I thrilled to my only sighting of a
Northern Harrier while parked by the Lothrop Road Bridge.)
Thompson's Wildflower Meadow - Opportunities for good
sightings are easily within 20 yards of the parking area. (I've seen
a pair of Red Tailed Hawks roosting on a pine tree edging the parking
area and I saw my very first American Kestrel 20 feet off the Old
Chatham Road parking area.)
Both are in Harwich & Bell's Neck has the advantage of a short
two mile drive from the Soundings.
